- Ceiling

- Width
- 12–15 ft
- Depth
- 16–20 ft
- Tight minimum
- 8.5 × 10 × 12 ft
A comfortable home simulator room is about 10 ft (3 m) high, 15 ft (4.6 m) wide and 16 to 20 ft (4.9 to 6 m) deep. You can make it work in less, down to roughly 8.5 ft high, 10 to 12 ft wide and 12 ft deep, if you choose the right launch monitor and accept a few limits.
Ceiling height is the constraint that bites most often in Canadian basements, where 7 to 8 ft ceilings are common in older homes. Measure it with your driver before you buy anything.
Minimum and ideal dimensions
| Workable minimum | Comfortable | What decides it | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ceiling height | 8.5 ft (2.6 m) | 10 ft (3 m) | Your height and the driver. Tall golfers need more. |
| Width | 10–12 ft (3–3.7 m) | 15 ft (4.6 m) | Room to stand on either side of the ball; both if you have lefties. |
| Depth | 12 ft (3.7 m) | 16–20 ft (4.9–6 m) | The launch monitor: camera units need less than radar. |
Checking your ceiling
Stand where the ball will be and make slow, full practice swings with your driver, then your wedge. If the club comes close to the ceiling at the top of the backswing or the follow-through, the room is too low for a full driver swing.
Common fixes: hit driver less often (irons need less height), place the hitting spot between floor joists, or choose a mat that is thinner. Lowering a basement floor is a major renovation; get a contractor quote before planning around it.
Depth depends on the launch monitor
- Camera units beside the ball: about 10 ft from the ball to the screen plus room for your swing behind it, so 12 to 15 ft total.
- Radar units behind the golfer: about 8 ft behind the ball plus 8 ft or more of ball flight, so 16 ft or more total.
- Leave 10 ft (3 m) at least between the ball and the impact screen so balls do not rebound back at you.
Canadian basements and garages
- Basements: watch for bulkheads, ductwork and support posts. A post in the swing zone ends the plan; a bulkhead above the screen usually does not.
- Garages: an attached garage often has 9 to 10 ft of height but the door track and opener hang lower. A high-lift track conversion or a ceiling-mounted opener can free up the space.
- Winter: an unheated garage in January is too cold for comfortable play and for most electronics. Budget for a heater and insulation, or plan the bay in the basement.
- Concrete floors: put a subfloor or thick mat under the hitting area; it is easier on joints and keeps the mat level.
Questions people ask
+Can I fit a golf simulator in an 8 ft basement?
Often only for irons and wedges. Many golfers can swing a driver under 8.5 ft, but at 8 ft most cannot. Test with slow full swings before buying.
+How wide does a golf simulator room need to be?
About 12 ft for right-handed golfers only, and 15 ft if left- and right-handers will share it, so each can stand on the correct side of a centred hitting spot.
+What is the shortest room that works?
About 12 ft deep with a camera launch monitor beside the ball. Radar units generally need 16 ft or more.
